How to use this tool

  1. Choose "My pace" to find your pace from a distance and time, or "My finish time" to find the time for a pace.
  2. Enter the distance and pick kilometres or miles.
  3. Enter your time in hours, minutes and seconds, or your pace in minutes and seconds per km or mile.
  4. Read your pace, speed and finish time, and see the times for 5K, 10K, half and full marathon at the same pace. Download them as a CSV.

How it works

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance. Divide the total time by the distance to get the pace. Speed is the opposite: distance divided by time. A pace of 5:15 per kilometre is the same as 8:27 per mile and a speed of 11.43 km/h.

Pace = time ÷ distance
Time = pace × distance
Speed (km/h) = 3600 ÷ seconds per km
1 mile = 1.609344 km

Good to know

Even pacing wins races. Running the first half faster than the second usually costs more time than it gains, so use the table to decide a realistic target and check it against your training runs. A 10 km time of 52:30 predicts about 1:55 for a half marathon only if you can hold that effort, which most runners cannot without specific training.

Treadmills show speed in km/h or mph, and watches show pace. Use the speed row to translate between them. Times are shown as minutes:seconds, or hours:minutes:seconds once they pass an hour. The calculator is for planning and does not predict race results.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance. For 10 km in 52:30 the pace is 5:15 per km.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply by 1.609344. A pace of 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile.

What will my marathon time be at this pace?

The table shows the time for 42.195 km at your pace, assuming you hold it all the way.
