How it works
A fixed deposit grows by compound interest. A recurring deposit does the same for each monthly instalment, from the month it goes in until maturity.
FD maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ f)f × t
RD maturity = sum over every instalment of R × (1 + r ÷ f)f × months left ÷ 12
r = annual rate, f = compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly), t = years
The after-tax figure subtracts your slab percentage from the interest. It is a simple estimate: it does not model TDS timing, the 87A rebate or other income.
Frequently asked questions
Which compounding do banks use?
Most Indian banks compound fixed deposits quarterly. Some small finance banks and post-office schemes use other schedules, so check your deposit receipt.
Why is my bank's maturity slightly different?
Banks round each quarter's interest and may count days exactly. The difference is normally a few rupees.
Is anything sent anywhere?
