How it works

PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of that month. It is added to your account once a year, on 31 March, and then earns interest too.

Interest for a month = balance after the month's deposit × annual rate ÷ 12
Yearly deposit by 5 April: interest = (opening balance + deposit) × rate
Credited on 31 March and added to the balance

That is why depositing early in the year, and by the 5th of each month, gives a bigger maturity value. The account runs for 15 years and can be extended in blocks of 5 years. Deposits are limited to ₹500 minimum and ₹1,50,000 maximum in a financial year.
