Nine kinds of unit, every answer at once

Choose length, weight, area, volume, temperature, speed, digital storage, time or pressure, type a value, and the converter shows the answer for the pair you picked plus a table of the same value in every other unit of that kind. That table is often the quickest way to sanity-check a figure: if a plot is 0.05 acres, you can see at a glance that it is also 2 guntha, 5 cents and 2,178 square feet.

Each unit is stored as a multiple of a base unit, and the factors are exact legal definitions where one exists: 1 inch is 25.4 mm, 1 foot is 0.3048 m, 1 pound is 0.45359237 kg, a US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and a UK gallon 4.54609 litres. Temperature is the exception, because its scales have different zero points, so it uses formulas instead of a single factor.

How to convert

1. Pick the kind of unit. The From and To lists refill with sensible defaults, such as kilometres to miles or square feet to square metres.
2. Type the value. Negative numbers are allowed only for temperature and speed, and nothing below absolute zero is accepted.
3. Choose the units to convert from and to, then read the large answer and the full table below it.
4. Copy the result line, which includes both units, so it can be pasted into a message without confusion.

Worked examples

Land and flats. One acre is 40 guntha, 100 cents, 4,840 square yards (gaj) and 43,560 square feet. A 1,200 sq ft flat is 111.48 square metres or 133.33 gaj. One hectare is 2.471 acres. In the north, one kanal is 20 marla, or 5,445 sq ft; in Chennai, one ground is 2,400 sq ft.

Gold and produce. 10 tola of gold is 116.64 grams, using the 11.664 g tola. One quintal is 100 kg, or about 220.46 pounds.

Body temperature and weather. 37 °C is 98.6 °F. At −40 the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales meet, so −40 °C is also −40 °F.

Why a new drive looks smaller. A 500 GB drive holds 500 billion bytes, which is 465.66 GiB. Windows divides by 1,024 (macOS uses 1,000), so Windows reports the drive as about 465 "GB". A 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB.

Travel and tyres. 100 km/h is 62.14 mph. A tyre pressure of 32 psi is 2.21 bar. Five UK gallons is 22.73 litres, but the same number of US gallons is only 18.93 litres.

Indian land units and other limits

Guntha (1,089 sq ft), cent (435.6 sq ft), kanal (5,445 sq ft), marla (272.25 sq ft) and ground (2,400 sq ft) use the fixed sizes shown in the list. Local practice can differ, especially for marla and kanal: many urban colonies use a 225 sq ft marla, so check which size your papers use. For a sale deed or a loan application use the area stated on the official land record, and treat this converter as a check. Bigha, katha and biswa are left out because their size changes from state to state.

Kitchen volumes use US measures, so a cup here is 236.6 ml and a teaspoon about 4.93 ml. Recipes from other countries can use slightly different spoons and cups. A month is taken as the average of 30.44 days and a year as 365.2425 days, so do not use those rows to count calendar dates; the date calculator does that. Very large and very small results switch to scientific notation, such as 1.5e-9, to stay readable.
