Take a photo on your phone and it does not just save what the camera saw. It quietly writes a hidden note on the side of the file: the make and model of your phone, the exact date and time, camera settings, and very often the precise GPS coordinates of where you were standing. This is called EXIF metadata, and a single image can carry roughly a hundred of these hidden data points.

Most people have no idea it is there. Interest in photo metadata has climbed sharply, up around 23% year over year, as more people realise what one shared image can give away.

What your photo is actually telling people

The GPS tag is the one that matters. Anyone who receives the original file can open its properties, read the coordinates, and drop them straight into a map. From a handful of your posts, a stranger can work out:

This is not a hypothetical. Domestic-abuse survivors have been traced to a new address through the location baked into one shared photo. Journalists and activists have had safe houses exposed the same way. For everyone else it is a quieter risk, but the coordinates of your front door should not travel with a picture of your dinner.

"But the app removes it, right?"

Partly, and that is the trap. When you post publicly, most big platforms do strip the visible metadata from the copy other people can download. So far so good. But there are three holes:

How to remove it in a few seconds

FAQ

Do my photos really contain my location?
If location services were on for the camera, yes. Photos taken on most phones store the exact latitude and longitude in the file's EXIF metadata, along with the date, time and device model. You can check any photo with the tool to see for yourself.
Doesn't social media already remove this?
Public posts usually have the visible metadata stripped from the downloadable copy, but the platform still received your full data on upload, and sending a photo as a file or attachment keeps everything. Removing it before you share is the only way to be sure.
Does removing metadata change my photo's quality?
No. The tool keeps the image data byte for byte and only drops the hidden information blocks, so the picture looks exactly the same. It is not re-compressed.
Which file types work?
It is built for JPEG photos, which is what phone cameras produce and where location data usually hides. Note that stripping also removes the orientation flag, so a photo that relied on it may need rotating.
