Group expense splitter

Paste the expenses one per line, like "Asha paid 1200 dinner". See who owes whom and the fewest payments that settle everything.

Group

Separate with commas. Anyone named in an expense is added automatically.

Expenses

Write "Name paid amount description". Add "for Name1, Name2" at the end to share it only between some people. Otherwise everyone shares it.

How to use this tool

  1. Type the names of the group, separated by commas.
  2. Write one expense per line, for example Asha paid 3600 hotel, and add for Name, Name if only some people shared it.
  3. Press calculate to see each person's balance.
  4. Follow the suggested payments, which settle everything with the fewest transfers, and copy the summary for the group.

How it works

Each expense is split equally between the people it is shared by. A person's balance is what they paid minus their share of everything. People with a positive balance are owed money, people with a negative balance owe it.

To settle up with the fewest payments, the biggest debtor pays the biggest creditor until one of them is clear, and so on. Money is counted in paise so shares always add up exactly, and any leftover paisa goes to the first people in the list.

Good to know

The splitter adds up what each person paid and what they owe, then finds who is owed money and who owes it. Matching the biggest creditor with the biggest debtor keeps the number of payments small. For a group of five friends, that is usually four payments or fewer.

It is useful for trips, shared houses, group gifts and events. Amounts are shown to the cent and rounded so the total always balances. Nothing is stored and no sign-up is needed, so you can paste the result into a group chat. For splitting a single restaurant bill with a tip, the tip and bill splitter is quicker.
