How to use this tool

  1. Type the bill amount before any tip.
  2. Set the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. Enter how many people share the bill.
  4. Read the total and each person's share. Choose "round up" if you prefer whole numbers, then copy the result to send to the group chat.

How it works

The tip is the bill times the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people. When you round each share up, the extra goes to the tip, so the effective tip is a little higher than the percentage you chose.

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
Each share = (bill + tip) ÷ people

Good to know

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States and Canada 15 to 20 percent is usual in restaurants, while in much of Europe a service charge is already on the bill and a small round-up is enough. In Japan tipping is not expected. Check whether service is included before you add a percentage on top.

If the group ordered unevenly, this tool splits evenly. For different shares, use the group expense splitter, which works out who owes whom with the fewest payments. The currency selector only changes the symbol and number format.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Either is acceptable. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

Why does rounding up raise the tip?

Each person pays a whole number, so the extra pennies or cents become additional tip. The effective tip row shows the new percentage.

Can I split unevenly?

This tool splits equally. For uneven shares use the group expense splitter.
