How the conversion works
Decimal hours = hours + minutes / 60
Minutes = decimal part x 60
Amount = total minutes x rate / 60
7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.3333, usually shown as 8.33. Payroll and invoices use decimal hours because they can be multiplied by a rate directly.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 6 | 0.10 |
| 10 | 0.17 |
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 20 | 0.33 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
| 60 | 1.00 |
In the timesheet, an end time earlier than the start time is treated as an overnight shift that ends the next day. Rounding is applied to each entry, then the entries are added up, so the total matches what each line would show on an invoice.
