How it works
Phone numbers are stored best in E.164 form: a plus sign, the country calling code and the national number with no spaces, such as +919876543210. The formatter removes spaces, dashes, brackets and a leading trunk zero, reads + or 00 international prefixes, checks the length against the national numbering plan and then groups the digits the way that country writes them. It also says whether a number looks like a mobile or a landline where the plan makes that clear.
An IBAN starts with a country code and two check digits, followed by the national account number. The validator checks the characters, the exact length for the country and the ISO 7064 mod-97 check, which catches nearly every single typo and swapped pair of digits.
Good to know
Numbering plans differ a lot. The United Kingdom and India drop the leading 0 after the country code, Italy keeps it, and the United States and Canada share +1 with ten-digit numbers. This tool covers 39 countries with their usual length ranges and groupings, but numbering plans change, so treat an unexpected result as a prompt to double-check, not as a final answer.
IBANs are used in 89 countries, mostly in Europe and the Middle East. India, the United States, Canada and Australia do not use them: Indian accounts use an account number with an IFSC code instead. A correct IBAN format is not proof of a genuine account, and fraudsters often send real-looking details, so confirm payment changes by phone with someone you know.
Frequently asked questions
What is E.164?
The international standard way to write a phone number: + then the country code and number, up to 15 digits, with no spaces.
Does it check that the number is real?
No. It checks the format and length for the country. It cannot tell whether a number is in use.
Why is my IBAN invalid?
Usually a mistyped or swapped character, or a missing digit. The result shows the expected length and check digits to help you find it.
Does India use IBAN?
No. Indian bank accounts use an account number plus an IFSC code. The GSTIN, PAN and IFSC checker checks IFSC codes.
Is anything sent or stored?
No. All checks run in your browser.
