What do you want to do?

For example 20 for UK VAT, 19 for Germany, 10 for Australian GST or 8.25 for a US state sales tax.

Result

Estimate only, not tax or legal advice. Tax rules, rates and limits change and depend on your own situation. Verify this result with a qualified tax professional or the official tax authority before you file, pay or decide.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose whether you are adding tax to a price or removing it from a total.
  2. Enter the amount and the tax rate that applies where you are selling or buying.
  3. Pick the name your country uses (VAT, GST, sales tax) and a currency if you want its symbol.
  4. Read the net price, the tax and the gross price. Add a quantity to get a total for several items, then copy or print the result.

How it works

Adding tax multiplies the net price by one plus the rate. Removing it divides a tax-inclusive total by the same factor. People often subtract the percentage instead, which gives the wrong answer: 20% of a €120 total is not €24 of tax, because the tax was charged on the smaller net price.

Add: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), tax = gross − net

Good to know

The same arithmetic covers VAT in the UK and EU, GST in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore and India, and the sales tax that US states add at the till. The calculator does not look up rates, because they vary by country, region, product type and date. Check the rate with your tax authority or accountant, especially for exports, zero-rated goods and reduced-rate items.

For invoices, round tax per line or per invoice the way your local rules require. This tool rounds to two decimals for display. Choosing a currency only changes the symbol and number format.

Frequently asked questions

How do I take VAT out of a price that includes it?

Choose "Remove tax from a total". At 20% VAT, a total of 120 has a net price of 100 and tax of 20.

Is sales tax calculated the same way as VAT?

The arithmetic is the same. Sales tax is usually added at the till on top of the shelf price, while VAT is often already included in the displayed price in Europe.

Does it work for GST in Australia, Canada or India?

Yes. Enter the rate, pick GST as the tax name and choose the currency. India has several GST slabs, so enter the one for your goods.

Is anything sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
