Weighted grade & final exam calculator

List your assignments, quizzes and tests with their weights. See your current weighted average and what you need on the rest to reach a target.

Scores

Score is a percentage, or write 17/20. Weight is the percent of the final grade.

Target

Leave empty to just see the average.

Empty means 100 minus the weight already graded.

How to use this tool

  1. Type one item per line as name, score, weight, for example Midterm, 78, 30.
  2. Add every item you have already finished.
  3. Optionally set the grade you want in the course and the weight still to come.
  4. Read your current weighted average and the score you need on the remaining work.

How it works

Weighted average = sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of weights
Score needed = (target − points earned) ÷ (weight still to come ÷ 100)

Points are score times weight. If a quiz is 80% and worth 10% of the grade, it adds 8 points. Add up the points of everything graded, then work out what the remaining weight must deliver to reach your target.

Good to know

A weighted average multiplies each score by its share of the final grade, then adds the results. A quiz worth 10% and an exam worth 40% pull the average by very different amounts, so the simple average of your scores is often misleading.

To find the score needed on a final, the calculator subtracts what you have earned so far from your target and divides by the weight still to come. If the answer is above 100% the target is out of reach and the tool says so. Check your course syllabus for how each category is weighted and whether the lowest score is dropped.

Frequently asked questions

What if the weights do not add to 100?

The average is still correct for what is graded. The tool warns when the weights go over 100.
