How to use this tool
- Choose whether you are converting an hourly rate to a salary or a salary to an hourly rate.
- Enter the amount and a currency.
- Set the hours you work per week and any unpaid weeks off.
- Read the hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly figures and copy them.
How it works
A yearly salary is the hourly rate times the hours per week times the number of paid weeks. A full-time job of 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so an hourly rate of 25 equals a yearly pay of 52,000. Divide a salary by the same number of hours to go back to an hourly rate.
Yearly = hourly × hours per week × paid weeks
Hourly = yearly ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks)
Monthly = yearly ÷ 12, Daily = weekly ÷ 5
Good to know
Freelancers should enter unpaid weeks off, because holidays, sick days and gaps between clients are not paid. Three unpaid weeks turn 2,080 hours into 1,960, which raises the hourly rate you need to hit the same yearly target by about six percent. Employees on paid leave can leave the field at zero.
All figures are before tax and benefits. A salary and an hourly contractor rate are not directly comparable, because an employer also pays for leave, insurance and equipment. The currency selector changes only the symbol and number format.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week and by the number of paid weeks. For 40 hours and 52 weeks that is the hourly rate times 2,080.
How do I turn a salary into an hourly rate?
Choose "Salary to hourly", enter the yearly amount and your hours. The tool divides by your hours per year.
What should freelancers enter for weeks off?
The weeks you expect not to bill: holidays, illness and gaps. This gives the hourly rate you need to reach a yearly target.
Is the result before or after tax?
Before tax. Use an income tax calculator for take-home pay.
