What counts as personal data in India

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, personal data is any data about an identifiable person. In everyday documents that usually means names, phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, Aadhaar and PAN numbers, bank account and UPI IDs, and dates of birth. Redact these before you paste a customer chat into a public forum, share a support log with a vendor or put an example into an AI chatbot.

Example

Before: "Hi, I am Priya Sharma, 98765 43210, priya@example.com. My order to 12 MG Road, Bengaluru has not arrived."

After (labelled): "Hi, I am [PERSON], [PHONE], [EMAIL]. My order to [ADDRESS] has not arrived." The message still makes sense for a bug report, but the customer cannot be identified.
