The usual reason: the file is too big

PNG stores every pixel losslessly. For a screenshot that is a feature. For a photograph it means a file several times larger than it needs to be, which is why upload forms with a size cap so often reject a PNG that a JPG would sail through.

Converting to JPG typically collapses the size dramatically for photographic content, with a quality difference most people cannot see at normal viewing size.

Transparency becomes white

JPG has no alpha channel. Any transparent area in your PNG is filled with white during conversion, which is the sensible default for documents, forms and print. If you need to keep transparency, convert to WebP instead so you get a smaller file and keep the alpha channel.

Where JPG is the right answer

Photographs going to a client, a print shop, an older system or a government upload portal. Anywhere you cannot control what will open the file. JPG is understood by essentially everything ever built.

Your files never leave your device

Conversion happens in your browser using the canvas engine already built into it. Nothing is transmitted, which is what you want when the PNG is a scanned document, an ID or a screenshot containing personal details. Watch the Network tab if you want proof.

Questions people ask

How much smaller will the JPG be?

For photographic content the saving is usually large, often well over half and sometimes far more. For flat graphics and screenshots the difference is smaller. The tool shows the exact figure per file.

What happens to the transparent background?

It is filled with white, because JPG cannot store transparency. Convert to WebP instead if you need to keep the alpha channel and still want a small file.

Will I lose quality?

JPG is lossy, so some data is discarded. At the default 0.90 quality the difference is very hard to see at normal viewing size. Lower the slider only for decorative images.

Is my PNG uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Open developer tools, watch the Network tab, and you will see no requests during conversion.

Can I convert several PNGs at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many as you like and they are converted together, each with its own download link.
