When you actually need a JPG
WebP is the better format for the web, but the web is not the only place your images go. Older software, some print workflows, a few marketplace upload forms and the occasional client machine still expect a JPG and will simply refuse a WebP.
Rather than argue with the system on the other end, convert. JPG is the most universally understood image format there is, and for a one-off handoff that universality is worth more than the file size.
Transparency becomes white
JPG has no alpha channel, so anything transparent in the source has to become something. This tool fills it with white, which is what you want in almost every case. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
Private by design
Your images are decoded and re-encoded by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no size cap imposed by a server, no watermark and no retention policy to worry about.
Check it yourself: open developer tools, select the Network tab, and convert a file. Nothing goes out.
Quality settings
The quality slider defaults to 0.90. Because you are converting from one lossy format to another, some quality has already been discarded and re-encoding discards a little more. Keeping quality high limits that second loss, and the file will still be reasonable.
Questions people ask
- Why will my software not open a WebP file?
- WebP is well supported in browsers but less so in older desktop applications, some print workflows and certain upload forms. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely.
- What happens to transparent areas?
- JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white. If you need to keep the alpha channel, convert to PNG instead.
- Will the image lose quality?
- A little, because both formats are lossy and you are re-encoding. Keeping the quality slider at 0.90 or above keeps that loss hard to see.
- Is my file uploaded to convert it?
- No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. Watch the Network tab in developer tools while converting and you will see no requests.
- Can I convert several WebP files at once?
