How to use this tool

  1. Enter your page title and meta description, and the page URL.
  2. Check the approximate preview of how the result may look in search.
  3. Watch the pixel-width and character counters to avoid your title or description being cut off.
  4. Edit the text until the preview looks right, then copy it into your page.

How it works

The blue title and grey description in a search result are limited by width in pixels, not by a fixed number of characters. Narrow letters like "i" and "l" take less room than "W" or "M", so a 60-character title can fit or be cut depending on the letters.

The checker measures your text with a common sans-serif font at the approximate sizes search engines use, then truncates it where the line would break. These limits are estimates. Google may show a different title, rewrite the description, or change layout at any time.

Good to know

Search engines cut titles and descriptions that are too long, replacing the end with an ellipsis. The limit is based on pixel width rather than characters, which is why a title full of narrow letters fits more than one full of wide ones. Roughly 580 pixels is the usual limit for a title on desktop and about 920 pixels for a description.

A clear title with the main keyword near the start, and a description that describes the benefit in plain words, tend to win more clicks. Search engines may rewrite them, but a good starting point helps. Make each page's title and description unique, and avoid stuffing keywords.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters should a title be?

There is no fixed number. Around 50 to 60 characters usually fits inside 580 pixels, but wide letters take more space.

Does a longer description help rankings?

Not directly. The description helps people decide to click, so use the space to say what the page offers.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Measuring happens in your browser.
