How it works
A slug is the readable part of a web address that names a page, such as free-invoice-maker in example.com/free-invoice-maker. The generator lowercases the text, turns accented letters into plain ones (é to e, ß to ss, ø to o), transliterates Cyrillic and Greek, spells out &, @, % and +, drops apostrophes so "don't" becomes "dont", and joins the words with your chosen separator.
Paste a whole list of titles to convert them at once. The tool warns you about duplicates, because two pages cannot share an address, and about lines that produce an empty slug.
Good to know
Good slugs are short, describe the page and use hyphens between words, which search engines read as spaces. Underscores join words together, so hyphens are the usual choice. Once a page is published, avoid changing its slug: if you must, set up a redirect from the old address so links and rankings are kept.
Non-Latin slugs, such as Hindi or Japanese words, work in modern browsers and can suit a local audience, but they appear as long percent codes when the address is copied and pasted. Keep "Keep non-Latin letters" off for the most portable addresses. Need to escape text for HTML instead? The Base64, URL, HTML and hash tool encodes and decodes HTML entities.
Frequently asked questions
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Search engines treat a hyphen as a space between words, and hyphenated slugs are easier to read.
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance: three to six words, or under about 60 characters, is a good target.
Should I remove words like "the" and "and"?
It often makes slugs shorter and cleaner, but keep them if the slug stops making sense without them.
Can I use it for file names?
Yes. Slugs are safe file names on every operating system.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
