20 KB is one of the tightest limits you will meet on Indian application portals. Many recruitment and admission forms ask for a signature between 10 KB and 20 KB and a photograph between 20 KB and 50 KB, and the upload button simply refuses anything larger. A phone photo is usually 2 to 5 MB, so you need to shrink it by around 99 percent without making the face or signature unreadable.
This page is preset to 20 KB. It first lowers JPEG quality step by step, and only if that is not enough does it reduce the pixel dimensions. That order matters: a 20 KB signature at 300 × 100 pixels stays crisp, while the same file squeezed only by quality would turn blocky.
How to use it
- Choose your image. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP photo or signature into the box, or tap to pick one.
- Keep or change the target. The target is preset to 20 KB. Change it if your form asks for a different limit.
- Download. Check the final size and dimensions, then download the JPG.
Tips for a sharp 20 KB file
- Crop first. Cut away table, background and margins before compressing. Fewer pixels to store means more quality left for the part that matters.
- Signatures: sign with a black pen on plain white paper, photograph in daylight, and crop tight. Clean white backgrounds compress far better than grey shadows.
- Photos: a plain light background and even lighting help the file stay under 20 KB with a clear face.
- Check the form's pixel rules too. Some portals give both a KB range and dimensions (for example 140 × 60 px for signatures). Resize to those dimensions, then compress.
- Too small is also rejected. If the form says 10–20 KB, a 6 KB file can fail. Use the 20 KB target and you will usually land between 15 and 20 KB.
How the 20 KB target works
JPEG file size depends on two things: how many pixels the image has and how much detail is kept per pixel (the quality setting). The tool tries the highest quality first. If the file is bigger than 20 KB, it uses a binary search, testing a quality halfway between the last good and bad values, so it finds the best setting in about eight quick tries. Only if even a low quality cannot reach 20 KB does it shrink the width and height by about 18 percent and search again. The result is the sharpest file that still fits.
If the portal still rejects the file
- Wrong format: rename nothing by hand. Download again; the file is a real JPG with a .jpg extension.
- Dimension rule: some forms check width and height as well as KB. Crop or resize to the stated pixels, then compress.
- Too small: if a minimum size is given, choose a slightly larger target from the list above.
- Browser cache: after replacing a file, refresh the form page before uploading again.
Private by design
There is no upload step and no account. The page loads the tool, and your browser does the work on your own device. That is why it is fast on good connections and still works if the network drops after the page has loaded. We don't see your files, photos, numbers or IDs, and we don't ask for your email.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a photo to 20 KB?
Drop the photo above. The tool keeps lowering JPEG quality, then size if needed, until the file is under 20 KB, and shows the final size before you download.
Can I reduce a signature to 10–20 KB here?
Yes. Signature scans are simple images, so they usually come out between 12 and 20 KB with clear strokes. Crop tight before you start.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser with the canvas API. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why is my 20 KB image blurry?
A large, detailed photo has to lose a lot of data to fit 20 KB. Crop to just the face or signature first, then compress again.
Which format will I get?
JPG, because almost every exam and government portal accepts it and it compresses photos best.
